Concentrated & Cleaned Live Phytoplankton

Concentrated & Cleaned Live Phytoplankton for the highest quality and value

One of the important features of DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton is to provide clean, live and nutritious phytoplankton without the contaminants from the culture media used to grow it. Phytoplankton is grown in culture media containing; nutrients (nitrates and phosphates), vitamins, ferric chloride, EDTA, cobalt chloride, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, manganese chloride, and sodium molybdate. If the culture media becomes low in nutrients, phytoplankton will quickly loose its nutritional value Therefore, for phytoplankton to be at its highest nutritional value it must be harvested while the media is still high in nutrients.

DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton is processed specifically for the safe use in ornamental and experimental aquaria. The closed system environment of an aquarium is especially sensitive to the metals and nutrients found in the culture media used to grow phytoplankton. DT’s Plankton Farm utilizes our proprietary concentration process in a cell washing procedure to remove nutrients and metals that are necessary to culture phytoplankton, without damaging the living cells.

7 steps to excellence

  1. Phytoplankton is concentrated.

  2. Clean saltwater is added to double the volume of the concentrated phytoplankton. This reduces the culture media to 50 %.

  3. Phytoplankton is concentrated for a 2nd time.

  4. Clean saltwater is added to double the volume of the re-concentrated phytoplankton. This reduces the culture media to 25 %.

  5. Phytoplankton is concentrated for a 3rd time.

  6. Clean saltwater is added to triple the volume of the re-concentrated phytoplankton. This reduces the culture media to 8.3 %.

  7. Phytoplankton is concentrated for the last time to density of the product.

The result is washed live phytoplankton cells that will not cause any buildup of nutrients or metals in your reef or experimental aquarium.

Compared to non-processed live phytoplankton
Value:

When DT’s Plankton Farm first produced live phytoplankton for the aquarium trade in 1996, it was non-processed Nannochloropsis oculata that retailed for $6.00 a quart and $18.00 a gallon. Now our Premium Reef Blend is 16 times the concentration of our old product. To compare the price of DT’s Live Marine Phytoplankton – Premium Reef Blend to a comparable size of non-processed live phytoplankton, you will need to take the cost of DT’s and divide it by 16 which is under $3.00 for a quart of non-processed live phytoplankton.

Quality is about feeding quality live phytoplankton without all the culture media that was used to grow it.

DT’s Live Marine Phytoplankton – Premium Reef Blend has only 8.3 % of the culture media left in the final product. It is also 16 times to density of non-processed phytoplankton.

1 oz (30 ml) x 8.3 % = 2.49 ml of culture media per 30 ml. To equal the amount of phytoplankton in 30 ml of DT’s Live Marine Phytoplankton – Premium Reef Blend will take approximately 16 oz (480 ml) of non-processed phytoplankton which is in the culture media that it was grown in.

480 ml of culture media divided by 2.49 ml DT’s = 192.8 times the amount of culture media added to the aquarium with non-processed phytoplankton as compared to DT’s Live Marine Phytoplankton – Premium Reef Blend.
